Natural home remedies: Indigestion

 Author: All-Bran | 18.05.2015

Indigestion is a pain or discomfort that is felt in the lower abdomen or in cases of heartburn, behind the breastbone. Both conditions may occur together or on their own.

The common symptoms with both indigestion and heartburn are:

  • Feeling full or bloated

  • Feeling sick or nauseous

  • Belching, burping or trapped wind

  • Regurgitating fluid or food into the oesophagus

All of these symptoms can make us feel less than at our best, but it just takes a few simple changes to your diet and lifestyle and those tummy niggles could be a thing of the past!

"Indigestion is a common complaint and can affect anyone, at anytime in his or her lives and in most cases is mild and easily treatable. There are many indigestion remedies available, both natural and medicinal."

For medicinal remedies, consult your doctor or pharmacist, however you may find these natural indigestion remedies helpful:

  • How, what, when? When eating, take your time and enjoy your food. Try to get to know your triggers and avoid eating foods that might have caused your symptoms to develop in the past.

  • Apples and bananas can help buffer against an acid reflux. It may sound cliché but an apple (or banana) really can keep the doctor and indigestion away!

  • Chewing gum can help increase saliva production and partially neutralise acid

  • Smoking and drinking alcohol can have a detrimental effect on your life for a number of reasons, and indigestion is one of the many symptoms. Stopping smoking can be difficult, so for advice on how to stop consult your doctor. By simply cutting down your weekly alcoholic intake you will notice a difference in your general health and wellbeing.

For more information, the World Gastroenterology Organisation has published a series of guidelines on common gastrointestinal symptoms.
