What is the Microbiome?

The Microbiome

Did you know that your body plays host to communities of microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi and viruses? The collective genomes of the micro-organisms in a particular environment is referred to as the microbiome, whereas the microbiota is the community of micro-organisms themselves. It might seem a bit odd to think of them living inside/ on you, but research is showing they have an important role in your health.

Our gut is home to approximately 100 trillion microorganisms, most of which are bacteria. They live throughout your gut but most are found in the large intestine.

You can keep your gut microbiome happy by eating a healthy, balanced diet that’s high in fibre including prebiotic fibres.
