Emma Lewell-Buck is the Labour Member of Parliament for South Shields. Before entering the House of Commons, Emma worked as a child protection social worker. She served as Councillor for the Primrose Ward in South Tyneside and as Lead Member for adult social care, before becoming the first woman to represent the South Shields Constituency in Parliament.
Emma is currently the Shadow Minister for Children and Families in the Education Team. Emma is a founding member of an All-Party Parliamentary Group on Hunger. The group aims to raise awareness around the problem of hunger in this country, to try to understand the underlying causes and to explore ways of addressing the issues
John McComb, St Kevin’s Primary School
John is the Vice Principal of St Kevin's Primary School on the Falls Road in Belfast. St Kevin's was named the Grand Winner of the Kellogg's Breakfast Club Awards in 2016.
John taught for twenty years in his home town of Lurgan before moving to St Kevin's where he has been Vice Principal for the last three years.
John and the school’s staff offer a wide range of before and after school experiences for pupils at St Kevin's. The school's breakfast club has been a steady and very popular feature of the school's provision for a number of years. The school's success in the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards is testimony to the work of school staff, canteen staff and parent volunteers.
In addition, the club wouldn't be feasible without the support of so many of the children's parents who place trust and confidence in the breakfast club; parents and staff recognise the benefit the breakfast club offers to children, to themselves and to the school as a whole.
Professor Greta Defeyter, Northumbria University
Professor Greta Defeyter has over 20 years’ experience of conducting research with children in schools and community projects. She has led over 200 school and community-based research projects in the UK and internationally and has published extensively in the area of children’s breakfast clubs and holiday hunger.
Her research has focused on school and community improvement, researching the impact of food consumption on cognition, educational attainment and social behaviours in children and wider communities.
She has informed policy makers, academics, user groups and the public of the benefits regarding children’s breakfast consumption at a National and International level for over ten years. She has provided direct input to public policymaking through membership and consultancy with decision making committees.
Megan Jarvie, Family and Childcare Trust
Megan works at the Family and Childcare Trust as Head of Policy and Communications. Megan leads on policy development and advocacy and government relations for Family and Childcare Trust, including providing the secretariat for All Party Parliamentary Group on Parents and Families.
Before joining the organisation she worked in campaigns at Child Poverty Action Group and Diabetes UK and in policy and strategy for local government and the NHS.
John Coe, National Association for Primary Education
Currently the Information Officer for the National Association for Primary Education, John Coe began teaching in Essex. After primary headships, first of a small rural school and then of an urban school serving an underprivileged community, he joined the West Riding of Yorkshire authority as Inspector of Schools. His second local authority appointment extended over 16 years as Senior Adviser to Oxfordshire.
In 1984 he moved into Higher Education as Course Leader of the PGCE Primary Course at the London Institute of Education. A later move to Oxford Brookes University involved him in research and both initial and in-service education. He is a Fellow of the University.
Lindsay Boswell, FareShare
Lindsay is passionate about fighting hunger and food waste in the UK. As Chief Executive of FareShare he provides leadership and direction to a network of charitable organisations across the UK.
Lindsay has 25 years senior management experience in the voluntary sector. Previously he was the Chief Executive of the Institute of Fundraising where he doubled income and membership and established the Fundraising Standards Board as a global leader in self-regulation.
Since Kellogg’s partnership with FareShare began in 2012, Kellogg’s has provided 1,025 tonnes of food, equating to 2,440,482 meals. This food has been used to support 242 breakfast clubs, 55 youth centres and 64 after school clubs across the UK. Kellogg’s are now distributing 60% of their surplus products to feed vulnerable people.
