Seeds for Africa was set up 10 years ago to help African families and communities by the provision of indigenous seeds, agricultural equipment and relevant technical advice, giving individuals and communities a future, not just a temporary answer. So far over 1,000 projects have been successfully completed in developing parts of the continent.

The Projects

Kellogg’s has provided funding for community projects in Kenya and Malawi. Here, project manager Margaret Ikiara explains how the funding will make a difference to the people of Meru, Kenya.

“Our partnership with Seeds for Africa began in 2005 and the first project involved working with ten primary and secondary schools, training the children on sustainable agriculture, empowering them to take up farming as a profession. We have also worked with women’s groups, showing them how to grow food to feed their families, selling any excess produce at the local market.”

“We help bring our people together to work towards a sustainable future. We work with local farmers, training them in sustainable agricultural practices, we do outreach work to educate local people on health issues like HIV and AIDS and we’re developing a resource centre so local people can access all kinds of information.”

“We’re using the donation from Kellogg’s to develop this model on a new project in Tigania, an area affected by unreliable rains. The area is so dry that the soil will need a lot of water before we can begin work. We’re installing a water tank to help the local people conserve any rain they have so they can use it for irrigation. We’re also providing a special organic fertilizer which is far more effective than normal fertilizer to help the farmers plant their maize. This project will change the lives of the people of Tigania so thank you to Kellogg’s for supporting us.”
