Kellogg's and packaging

Kellogg's and packaging

When the first Corn Flake packet went into large scale production in the early 20th century it was made of recycle cardboard and the same is true today.

We are serious about reducing the impact of our business. That’s why our plastic cereal liners are 40pc thinner than 30 years ago.

The environmental impact of our packaging is something we’ve been taking seriously since we started our business more than one hundred years ago. The first box of Kellogg’s® Corn Flakes® came off the line packaged in 100 percent recycled paperboard.

Our plastic is already 40 per cent thinner than 30 years ago without compromising safety, shelf life or damage of the cereal. In addition, our cereal and cereal bar boxes are made out of 88-90% recycled materials. We need to add 10-12% virgin fibre board to our packaging to give it the strength is needs to protect the food. If we used 100% recycled fibre the packaging would be thicker and heavier.

Like many others we look at packaging during the life cycle of the product rather than just considering what’s left after the cereal has been eaten.

Packaging plays a key role in cutting down the waste of our products – without the carton something as fragile as a Corn Flake is very easily crushed.  Cutting down packaging waste but driving up food waste is hardly an environmental win. According to the UK Government’s waste and packaging experts WRAP, only a tiny percentage of the UK’s avoidable food waste is cereal - less than rice or pasta - so our packaging is clearly doing its job during shipping and at home.
