Employees to benefit from ‘Summer Hours’
- Starting this week Kellogg’s UK office employees will benefit from Friday afternoons off during summer months
- One third of employees used the scheme in 2007 to spend more time with their children
Employees at Kellogg’s UK office benefit from a ‘summer hours’ scheme that is now in its fifth year and encourages employees to spend more time with their families during the summer holidays. The initiative, which starts on 9th May, means that everyone finishes work at 12pm on a Friday* between May and September in order to benefit from the extra leisure or family time.
A survey of Kellogg’s employees shows that 70 per cent** used the scheme regularly last year. They felt the benefits were that they could spend extra time with their kids (32 per cent) and 69 per cent used it to have long weekends away during the summer months. The scheme has also helped with motivation as 82 per cent of employees felt happier in their jobs because of it.
Jacqueline Grainger, Kellogg’s UK HR director comments, “Summer Hours is a great scheme that all of our employees, including those without a family, benefit from and feedback shows that it helps make our company a great place to work. Flexible working is something we take very seriously at Kellogg’s and this is part of a package that we offer to ensure that we provide work life balance opportunities to all employees. ”

Bruce Learner, Kellogg’s corporate responsibility manager comments: ““Summer hours are very useful to me because they help me get away early on a Friday and miss the traffic. This is really important during the school holidays when the kids are off and we can head to the countryside on Friday afternoons to make the most of family time with the kids. It feels like you get an extra day.”

Stevie Reid, Kellogg’s nutritionist comments: “Summer hours really improves motivation during the summer months but people seem to be just as productive. I really enjoy the free Friday afternoons so that I can spend more time on outdoor activities and make the most of the warmer weather.”
