- Slimming has become an expensive luxury for many women say health experts
WOMEN in the UK cannot break the diet cycle because slimming has become too expensive and time consuming for the average woman, say top health experts.
According to a new report* over half of health care professionals believe many mainstream slimming clubs and groups are not accessible and in tune with busy modern lifestyles creating a major barrier for women wanting to lose weight.
.The research by www.myspecialk.co.uk also revealed women themselves admitted the main barrier to slimming success was that it was too expensive to manage with a third of women saying that the recession had made a lot of the mainstream dieting options a luxury they cannot afford.
Time is also a major issue for women with 42pc admitting they find it hard to attend meetings and to stick to diet plans as they don’t fit in with their busy schedules.
While a third of health workers, including GPs and nurses, said that they believe public meetings and weigh ins were a serious barrier to many women losing weight because it made women feel embarrassed and exposed.
The study of 500 health care professionals and 1500 women revealed 55pc of women believe traditional calorie counting combined with exercise is the most successful way to slim and that in 2011 more than a quarter would be looking at alternative ways of losing weight rather than join a slimming club due to concern about expense.
It seems the internet is the key to weight loss success with 54pc of health experts believing it was important to be able to access programmes online and for women to be able to manage their weight in private.
While women said they believed the slimming holy grail was something that was simple, free and encouraged them to break long term bad eating habits.
Suzann Forman, brand manager for myspecialk.co.uk, said; “This research mirrors what women have been telling us – that they want a modern free solution to managing their weight. They want something that is free and easy to access on the go so they aren’t fitting their life in around their slimming plan but the other way round – which is why we have developed and improved myspecialk.co.uk which offers women all these things.”
