Scottish Olympian Hannah Miley announces Kellogg’s as new sponsor for Scottish Swimming
09/04/2009

Scottish Olympian Hannah Miley was poolside today at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh to support the launch of a three year partnership between Scottish Swimming and Kellogg’s.

Kellogg’s has pledged £160,000 to Scottish Swimming over the next three years and will support every level of swimming, from grassroots to gold medals.

The partnership will focus on three key areas:

  • The Kellogg’s Scottish Swimming Awards – Kellogg’s will sponsor the scheme which is focussed on motivating children to learn to swim and stay healthy
  • Kellogg’s Swim Active - The Kellogg’s Swim Active is designed to break down the barriers to swimming and get an estimated 15,000 kids across Scotland more active in the water. East Dunbartonshire Council have taken the lead encouraging thousands of kids into the water through mini-polo taster sessions.
  • Team Kellogg’s – Hannah Miley is one of ten British athletes receiving funding from Kellogg’s. This funding provides invaluable coaching and training for each athlete in their quest for medal success in the pool.

Speaking from poolside Hannah said: “I have been fortunate to be one of the beneficiaries of Kellogg’s support, which has made a big change to my swimming career and prospects. As part of the ‘Team Kellogg’s’ sponsorship, my father, Patrick, who is also my coach, has been able to provide me with the relevant equipment and tools needed to help my progression and meet my training needs. Without such support from businesses, from Scottish Swimming, and other parts of the community, young people like me and the young people competing today at the National Age Groups competition would not be able to follow our dreams to compete at the highest level”.

David Walker, Swimming Development Officer at East Dunbartonshire Council, has been implementing the Kellogg’s Swim Active Mini-Polo project. He said: “Kellogg’s Swim Active is a fantastic initiative. Around 3,000 children have enjoyed the mini-polo taster sessions so far. Many of them would not have come near the water because they either cannot swim or lack confidence in and around a pool environment. Mini-polo has broken down that barrier and has allowed them to get involved alongside their friends and have fun. It’s no longer a problem getting them in the water, it’s getting them out that takes the time!”

Ashley Howard, Chief Executive of Scottish Swimming, said:
“Scottish Swimming is delighted to be working in partnership with Kellogg’s to help reach our participation and performance targets. Swimming is one of Scotland’s most preferred activities for children and adults. We know that we are perfectly positioned to have a powerful impact on the health of the nation, but our programmes need to be properly resourced to take full effect. The investment from Kellogg’s allows us to take forward our Healthy Living agenda in a significant manner, including mini-polo and discounted swimming lessons in lower income areas”.

Bruce Learner, Community and Social Responsibility Manager at Kellogg’s, said: “While we can provide the kick-start to the day with a nutritious breakfast, we believe it is essential that people get active as well. We’re committed to getting this healthy lifestyle message across and our partnership with Scottish Swimming allows us to encourage swimming as an essential life skill, great fun and a fantastic way for people to stay active. The more that business works in partnership with communities, the more we can achieve.”
