Paralympic hero visits Kellogg's Swim Active project in Rhondda
31/03/2009

Paralympic hero Dave Roberts will today meet twelve sixth formers from Treorchy Comprehensive School who have given up their spare time to train as swimming teachers thanks to funding from the Kellogg’s Swim Active programme.

Swim Wales, the governing body for swimming, has received £5,000 from Kellogg’s to fund the Swim Active project in Rhondda which aims to remove the barriers children may have that prevent them from participating in swimming.

The youngsters achieved their UKCC Level 1 in Aquatic teaching and have delivered a 12 week training programme to children across Rhondda’s primary schools. The children are celebrating the end of the project at the Aqua Splash Festival, sponsored by Kellogg’s, at Ystrad Sports Centre on Tuesday 31st March.

Kirstyann Clatworthy, 17, from Treorchy Comprehensive School, said: “I wanted to take part in this training so I would get a better understanding of how children learn to swim. I have always liked swimming and I’ve really enjoyed teaching the children and watching their skills progress.”

Children from six local primary schools are taking part in the festival including Bodringallt, Llwynypia, Pentre, Pontrhondda, Ton Pentre and Trealaw. The schools will compete in mini polo, obstacle courses as well as relays.

Kellogg’s Community and Social Responsibility Manager, Bruce Learner, says, “We are delighted to be a part of this worthwhile project which will help in getting more people swimming on a regular basis. This forms part of a national campaign called Swim Active that we are supporting and running to get people across the UK more fit and healthy.”

Kellogg’s Swim Active is a 3 year programme which aims to breakdown the barriers that prevent people from swimming. Between 2007 and 2009 Kellogg’s will invest £90,000 into Swimming projects in Wales and during that time  hopes to get 5000 people active through swimming.
