From Bran Flakes to Beijing - Team Kellogg's return from Olympics
25/08/2008

A group of young athletes, collectively known as Team Kellogg’s, return today from Beijing with high hopes of success ahead of London 2010.

The group have been sponsored by Kellogg’s for the last two years as part of a ‘grass roots to gold medals’ partnership with the amateur swimming association (asa) which aims to get people swimming across the UK.

Hannah Miley, Lizzie Simmonds, Francesca Halsall and Dean Milwain were all competing in The Water Cube as well as Olivia Allison who was the first British synchronised swimmer to make the finals since 1992. In addition, disability swimmer

Sam Hynd is a hot favourite for the Paralympics in September following a brilliant 2008 campaign that has seen him smash the world record at the Paralympic World Cup and German Open Disability Championships.

The athletes have all received funding for essential training and coaching to ensure their ongoing development and ultimately achieve their goals of medal success in the pool.

The Kellogg’s website www.kelloggs.co.uk/whatson/teamkelloggs provided visitors with news and images of the athletes as they progressed through the competition. Visitors were provided with a dynamic and engaging experience through headlines, photos, quotes and pod casts on each individual team member, updated continuously throughout the day.

Sam Hynd said: “I am living my dream every day and this is partly made possible by the help and support I get from Kellogg’s. They not only give me vital financial support for the training needed to get me to the highest level but I know they are behind me in my quest to reach that podium so that is very special to me. I hope the awareness around the Olympics encourages and inspires future athletes, especially those with a disability like me.”

Bruce Learner, Corporate & Social Responsibility Manager, said: “It was so exciting to watch the team in Beijing and we look forward to playing a part in the future development of emerging talent in British swimming. Team Kellogg’s is just one element of our massive commitment to all levels of swimming in the UK. We’re extremely proud of our work to encourage people of all abilities to take advantage of the many health benefits that can be achieved through swimming, which stems back to 1997.”

Notes to Editors
o Kellogg’s has been working in partnership with the Amateur Swimming Association since 1997: it first partnered with the ASA to sponsor the ASA Swimming Awards Scheme and in 2007 worked with the ASA to develop the Kellogg’s Swim Active programme.
o Nationally, Kellogg’s is investing £3m between 2006 and 2008, committing approximately £1m per year.  This three-year commitment to the governing body of swimming in England, which will also benefit the sport in Scotland and Wales, is designed to specifically promote the ongoing benefits of physical activity and break down any barriers people may have that prevent them from participating in swimming.
o Since the partnership between Kellogg’s and the ASA began, more than 13 million swimming awards have been presented to youngsters, making the scheme the most successful awards scheme in British sport.
