Health Minister presents National award at Scotland’s best breakfast club
08/05/2009

Nicola Sturgeon, Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, and Ian Davidson MP today visited Hill’s Trust Primary School in Govan, Glasgow, to present the Best Breakfast Club in Scotland Award.

The National Breakfast Club Awards are run by Kellogg’s and learning charity ContinYou and celebrate the achievements of all the clubs who help ensure thousands of children across the country get the best possible start to their day. A panel of judges searched for clubs that demonstrate excellence in health and nutrition, community involvement as well as those clubs that offer extra learning activities for the children.

In 1997, Hill’s Trust Home School Community Project set up the first breakfast club in Glasgow and was used as example of good practice before being rolled out in 2003 to all breakfast clubs in Glasgow. This resulted in Glasgow being the first local authority in the UK to offer free breakfast clubs in all its primary schools. The club has gone from strength to strength and is a great example of best practice so will receive an award of £1500.

Up to 40% of the school roll attends the breakfast club each day. On accepting the award, Joanne Aitken, Breakfast Club Playwork Coordinator, said: “Our high attendance can be largely attributed to the daily programme of games and activities that are offered to pupils. Our club is a relaxing yet stimulating way to start the day. A good breakfast and fun activities help put children in a good mood in the morning. They then come into class more settled, calmer and in a learning frame of mind. When we say healthy and happy at Hill’s Trust we really mean it!”

“We are delighted to be chosen the winner of the Scotland award,” Joanne continued. “This award recognises the hard work, careful planning and dedication of our staff and parent/carer volunteers over the last 12 years.”

Nicola Sturgeon MSP said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Hill’s Trust Primary School. The breakfast club has obviously gone from strength to strength since it opened in 1997 and the school really deserves this recognition from Kellogg’s.”

Bruce Learner, Community and Social Responsibility Manager at Kellogg’s, said at the event:  “It’s great to be able to recognise such great breakfast clubs as our award winners, they are an inspiration and I have seen today what difference it makes to the local children, as well as families all over Scotland. Not all children have access to a breakfast club like this which is why Kellogg’s is investing £340,000 over the next three years to develop and support breakfast clubs in the areas that most need them.”

Tony Apicella, National Programme Director at ContinYou, said, “ContinYou is delighted to recognise the rich breadth of delivery that many breakfast clubs provide. Once again, our national awards have spotlighted 'what works well' and rewarded all those who have demonstrated how breakfast clubs can support a range of needs for children, young people and families in both school and community settings.”
