  7. How are links chosen for the Kellogg's site?

The Kellogg's sites and specifically the adopt a monkey site (www.adoptamonkey.co.uk & www.adoptamonkey.ie) includes links to both internal (Kellogg) and external (non-Kellogg) websites. These links have been chosen to provide the user with greater information and or to provide the consumer with the opportunity to take advantage of a promotion through a third party.

    Links to external websites

External links are selected and reviewed when the homepage is published. However, Kellogg's is not responsible for the content of external websites. This is because:

    • Kellogg's does not produce them or maintain/update them.
    • Kellogg's cannot change them.
    • They can be changed without Kellogg's knowledge or agreement.
    • Some of our external links may be to websites which also offer commercial services, such as online purchases.

The inclusion of a link to an external website from the Kellogg's homepage should not be understood to be an endorsement of that website or the site's owners (or their products/services).

    Sign posts and content information

    • When linking to an external site we will ensure that:
    • The first click from the Kellogg's homepage should not normally lead straight to a page which includes material which is unsuitable for a general audience.
    • Where appropriate, users are informed of the nature of the material they might expect to see or hear by clear labelling on destination pages and on the video or radio players.

Monkey FAQs

  1. Where does my monkey live?

All of the monkeys available for adoption within the Adopt a Monkey promotion live at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre in Malawi. The sanctuary is a facility for wild animals that are rescued or confiscated from private ownership and trade within Malawi. It provides a facility for injured wild animals to be cared for and to recuperate with the aim of one day releasing them back into the wild.

The land on which the centre is situated is within a sanctuary/wilderness area. It is made up of 78 hectares (78,000 square meters). 60 hectares (60,000 square meters) provide the wilderness zone for animals that cannot be returned to the wild and may need supplemental feeding. The other 18 hectares (18,000 square meters) are for enclosures and education and vet facilities.

Malawi is a long narrow landlocked country situated in south-east Africa and is bordered by Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique. Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is located in Lilongwe which is the capital city of Malawi.

  2. How am I helping to look after my monkey?

By claiming your adoption you are helping Kellogg's to help Born Free look after monkeys at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre in Malawi. Kellogg's is donating funds to Born Free in order to help fund the following:

    • Care for each monkey: This includes the monkey's food, any special dietary requirements, supplements or vitamins. It also includes any medical care that the monkey may require.
    • Upkeep of the Lilongwe sanctuary. This includes general maintenance of the sanctuary, staffing costs, staff uniforms, medical equipment, and vehicle maintenance
    • Enclosure costs: To build, renovate and maintain the large enclosure which allow the monkeys to live in as natural environment as possible. It ensures that the monkeys are safe from poachers and other wild animals whilst they return to full health.
    • Monkey release program: Allows Born Free staff to research suitable release sites for the different species of monkeys and purchase the necessary research equipment. It also allows the monkeys to be electronically tagged so that there progress can be monitored once they have been released.
    • Rescue costs: Helps Born Free to fund research into potential rescue operations and take the required action to remove monkeys from harmful and dangerous situations and give them a better quality of life.

Also, while the Centre focuses on the rescue and care of wild animals, it also tries to target the source of the problem. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa and the trading of wild animals is often driven by poverty. The sanctuary therefore supports a new initiative known as the 'People and Wildlife Centre' which looks at a range of initiatives to support local people to help themselves. They help by giving them a 'shop front' to sell their crafts and wares, through to arranging and funding workshops on efficient farming practices.

It also supports the local community to live together with the animals, and works to educate the local community in terms of their environment and conservation.

  3. I cannot find the monkeys that are on the packs to adopt online, where are they?

Some of the monkeys on pack may have been released already and therefore are unavailable for adoption. However there are lots of other monkeys online who would love for you to adopt them.

  4. Does the sanctuary only look after monkeys or do they help other animals?

The sanctuary will take in any wild animals that are indigenous to Malawi e.g. antelope, reptiles, birds etc however the main types of animals they look after are baboons and vervet monkeys.

  5. What usually happens to the monkeys once they have been rescued?

When the monkeys arrive at the sanctuary they are placed in quarantine for 30 days. After this, and presuming everything is satisfactory, they are carefully introduced to the appropriate resident troop. The monkeys are then cared for and given any appropriate medical treatment they need to get back to being fit and healthy.

The eventual aim of the sanctuary is to release the monkeys back into the wild. The next batch of monkeys will be released at the end of 2009. Before they are released radio collars will be attached to several of the monkeys so the progress of the troops can be monitored and the monkeys protected as much as possible. Being able to track the monkeys also means we can continue to give updates on their progress as they begin their new exciting life of freedom.

  6. Why is my adoption a share in a monkey and not a whole monkey of my own?

There are not enough monkeys for everyone to have a monkey of their very own. When adopting a monkey you are obtaining a share of a monkey along with several other people. You, together with the help of Kellogg's and other Kellogg's consumers, are helping provide food and care for your monkey as well as the upkeep of the sanctuary where your monkey lives.
