Routes & signs

Cycle routes are really easy to find – if you know what you are looking for.

When you’re out and about you’ll know you are on a National Cycle Network route by the type of signs you see. Blue signs with a bicycle in white indicate you are on a cycle route.

The number on that sign tells you which route you are on – the route number will either be against a blue background (regional route) or a red background (national route).

Look out for these signs - they will guide you and tell you what other routes are available when they meet and cross each other.

While on route, here are a few little dos and don’ts to follow:

  • Do try to have a bell fixed to your bike and don’t forget to use it to alert pedestrians and other users to your presence.
  • Do give way to pedestrians and other path users when on a shared use path.
  • Do obey the Highway Code when cycling on the road.
  • Don’t cycle on the pavement unless it is specifically designated as a shared use path for cyclists and pedestrians.
